Prosecutors charged Allen on 26 April with two federal offences: using a firearm during a crime of violence, and assault on a federal officer with a dangerous weapon. Both carry mandatory minimum sentences. A detention hearing before a federal magistrate in Washington, D.C., is expected within the week. The Department of Justice declined to say whether additional charges are under consideration.

Trump addressed the shooting on 26 April, using the incident to renew his push for a private White House ballroom.
