Whether a sequel can recapture what made the original work is a different question from whether it will make money. The first film drew its satirical force from a specific cultural moment — the mid-2000s fashion industry at its most unself-aware, Hathaway at the start of a career the audience was watching form in real time, and Streep in a role so controlled it seemed to generate its own cold front. The Bezos parody suggests the film knows this, leaning into contemporary targets rather than recreating the original's milieu.

Anna Wintour, Editor-in-Chief of Vogue and widely understood to be the partial basis for Priestly, did not attend the New York premiere. She is expected at a private industry screening before the film opens commercially on 1 May.
